£500 Grant
The Conservation
Volunteers would like to thank County Councillor Deirdre Gates for
the £500 grant, from the Locality Budget Scheme Allocations.
Some specialist tools have been ordered and are now
with us. The tools will be used in the manual
removal of young Rhododendron and the thinning of saplings.
Also a display board and display material will allow
the group to put on local displays to promote the woods and increase membership.
Co-operative Community Fund Award
The volunteers have successfully applied for a community award which will help the group open up some of the smaller paths and make larger glades by means of a professional brush cutter.
Tree Work
Over the next few months contractors will again be working in the woods to mow along the sides of the main footpaths and easy access trail, and some of the paths will be cut back substantially in the central woodland.
In the northern woodland a local coppice worker will be cutting hazel alongside the paths and the Oxhey Woods Conservation Volunteers & CMS volunteers will be cutting back paths in the southern compartment.
Across the woodland some of the veteran trees will have work carried out on them to reduce their crowns, this will help prolong their lives and prevent large branches from snapping out and causing damage.
Rhododendron Control Work
Contractors will also be carrying out Rhododendron control work as set out in the recent plan, mature bushes will be treated with herbicide.
The process of restoring the Rhododendron Walk will also begin, this will be a gradual process over several years with strangely old sections cleared and replanted with less invasive species.
Glade Creation
The Volunteers have started on a 1300sq/m Glade more on this in the next few weeks
